Different by Design
About
A heartfelt true story of faith, family, autism, and discovering purpose beyond a diagnosis.
When Wilson and Harriet welcomed their son, James, into the world, they saw him as the answer to years of prayer. From the beginning, James was thoughtful, observant, and wonderfully unique. But as he grew, his parents began to notice differences they could not ignore—delayed speech, social challenges, a need for routine, and a way of seeing the world that set him apart.
When James was diagnosed with autism, Wilson and Harriet faced a future filled with questions. Would he find friends? Would school understand him? Would he be able to use the gifts God had placed inside him? And would they know how to support the child they loved so deeply?
Different by Design follows one family’s journey through diagnosis, therapy, school transitions, friendship, music, sports, service, and faith. With the help of family, teachers, therapists, church members, coaches, and mentors, James begins to grow in confidence and discover the places where he belongs.
Through challenges and victories, Wilson and Harriet learn that autism is part of James’s story, but it is not the whole story. His life is marked not by limitation, but by purpose, perseverance, and God-given design.
Written with warmth, honesty, and hope, this faith-centered family narrative will encourage parents, caregivers, educators, ministry leaders, and anyone who needs a reminder that every child is created with dignity, gifts, and purpose.
A diagnosis may explain part of the journey, but it does not define the destination.
